The Department of Folkloristics is a research centre established on January 29, 1947. The centre focuses on the comparative studies of the religions and mythology of Estonians and other nations, narrative forms, and short forms, as well as observation of the dynamics of phenomena. The fields of research also cover in-depth studies into contemporary phenomena of humour and folklore (incl. internet folklore and rumours) as well as biocultural diversity and ethno-botany.
The main fields of activity of the DF are digitisation and internet projects, the ongoing creation of digital archives, specialty open-access databases and scholarly publications to be used free of charge, including e-journals Folklore: Electronic Journal of Folklore and Mäetagused. Centre of Excellence in Estonian Studies 2015-2023. The members of the Centre of Excellence in Estonian Studies (CEES) are engaged in the studies of linguistic and social phenomena as well as theoretical and applied research into cultural practices. The centre promotes the extensive application of computational, statistical, and other opportunities provided by digital humanities in the field of the humanities.
The CEES assembles researchers and post-graduate students from the Estonian Literary Museum, the University of Tartu (from the sphere of the humanities and arts as well as natural and exact sciences), the Institute of the Estonian Language, Tallinn University, the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, and Tallinn University of Technology.
